Betty White, actress, perhaps best known for her role on the 1980’s NBC hit The Golden Girls as Rose Nylund, passed away today, TMZ reports.
White, who hails from Oak Park, Illinois, was known to an older generation of fans for playing Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s.
She began her career in television in 1949, and in 1951 was nominated for her first Primetime Emmy Award.
Betty White could often be seen in the 1960s and 1970s on the gameshow Password with her husband, Allen Ludden, who was the host of the show. The couple married in 1963.
She was also the hostess of the Tournament of Roses Parade for nearly 20 years.
White became the first woman to win a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host for the show Just Men! in 1975 and The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1976.
Betty White won the 1986 Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in The Golden Girls. She also earned six other nominations for her work as Rose.
Joined in The Golden Girls by Rue McLanahan, Estelle Getty, and Bea Arthur, White was the last living member of the cast before her death today, New Year’s Eve.
She also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was included in the Guinness World Records book as the record-holder for Longest TV Career for a Female Entertainer.
“It’s your outlook on life that counts,” Betty White once said. “If you take yourself lightly and don’t take yourself too seriously, pretty soon you can find the humor in our everyday lives. And sometimes it can be a lifesaver.”
