Two teens were shot in Mesquite in the early hours of Monday morning – the city’s second fatal teen shooting within a week.

Officers with the Mesquite Police Department responded to a shooting early the morning of July 28, according to a statement the department posted on Facebook. A 15-year-old and 16 16-year-old were in a bedroom when gunshots rang out, resulting in the 15-year-old being in critical condition, and the 16-year-old, who lived in the home, being dead.

Mesquite police responded to a reported shooting at 12:51 a.m. near 1500 Rusk Drive, according to the statement. The teens were in a bedroom when an “adult resident of the home” heard gunshots. After going into the room, the adult found they had both “sustained gunshot wounds.”

Both teens were transported to a “nearby hospital” for treatment, where the 16-year-old died.

“At this time, the incident appears to be isolated to the individuals involved, and there is no known threat to the public,” the statement reads. Officials said they would provide further information as soon as possible.

The Dallas Express reached out to Mesquite police, but did not hear back in time for publication.

Just less than a week ago, Mesquite saw a chillingly similar incident – another 15 and 16-year-old was involved in a shooting, and the 16-year-old died.

Mesquite police responded to a shooting near 2100 Pecan Creek Drive at 9:30 p.m. on July 24, the department posted on Facebook.

When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old male “suffering from a gunshot wound,” and responders brought him to a local hospital for “non-life-threatening injuries.”

A 16-year-old male was also found nearby and “pronounced deceased at the scene.” According to WFAA, he was identified as Brandon Lil Wayne McGhee.

Investigators identified the suspect as a 15-year-old male and arrested him at 10:05 a.m. on July 26.

Mesquite police were still investigating the shooting at the time of the statement. Officials “urged” anyone with information to contact the department.
