Officers with the Lewisville Police Department shot and killed a suspect who pulled a gun on them Wednesday evening after a lengthy pursuit.
Lewisville police pulled over a driver just after midnight. July 24. The female suspect fled, leading officers on a chase through multiple cities, which ended before she pulled a gun on officers, who then subsequently shot her. She ultimately died just after 1 a.m.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office will release the suspect’s information, according to the department.
One woman, 43-year-old Joanna Rebecca Rogers, died at 1:16 a.m. in Medical City Lewisville, according to medical examiner records. Her case was being handled by Lewisville police.
The Dallas Express asked the department to confirm if she was the suspect, but Officer Tre Mathis said he could not provide any additional information.
“The statement provided is the extent of the information we are able to provide at this time,” Mathis added.
An officer pulled the suspect over shortly after midnight, suspecting her of “having a felony warrant issued by another agency,” according to a statement from the department. The officer checked her identity and was confirming the warrant when she fled “at a high rate of speed.”
The suspect – the only person in the vehicle – led police on a chase through “multiple jurisdictions.”
“During the pursuit, the suspect caused a collision with an LPD patrol vehicle and continued to flee from officers,” the statement reads. The officer driving the patrol car was not injured.
The pursuit ended in a “commercial parking lot” in the 2200 block of the southbound I-35E service road in Lewisville. Officers tried to arrest the suspect, but she reportedly pulled a handgun and “did not comply with the officers’ multiple commands to drop the weapon.”
“Shots were fired by LPD officers,” the statement reads. “The suspect was struck by the gunfire.”
So officers took “lifesaving measures” and immediately called for medical help from the Lewisville Fire Department. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died just after 1 a.m.
There were no other injuries to civilians or police, and investigators recovered a handgun from the suspect’s vehicle.
The department is performing an Internal Affairs investigation to determine whether they adhered to the proper policies, according to the statement. The department also requested an independent investigation by the Texas Rangers. Meanwhile, the four officers involved are on “routine administrative leave.”
