Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Thursday that federal approval was received to extend Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program replacement benefits for flood victims through August 18, and five additional counties now qualify for replacement benefits.

The extension provides critical relief to families in 26 Texas counties who lost groceries during the recent catastrophic flooding. Recipients can replace destroyed food items using their Lone Star Cards.

“The State of Texas continues to support Texans impacted by the recent catastrophic flooding so they can care for themselves and their families,” Abbott said in a press release. “SNAP recipients in 26 counties now can apply for food replacement benefits through August 18.”

Hamilton, Lampasas, Maverick, Sutton, and Uvalde counties join 21 previously approved counties. The U.S. Department of Agriculture had earlier authorized benefits for flood victims in Central and West Texas communities.

“During these stressful times, I am thankful we can extend support,” said HHSC Deputy Executive Commissioner Molly Regan. “Helping families have access to the food they need can bring some relief as they continue to rebuild.”

SNAP recipients can request replacement benefits by calling 2-1-1 and selecting option 7. They can also download Form H1855 from the HHSC website and submit it by mail or fax.

Replacement funds will appear on Lone Star Cards within two business days. The program covers food lost or destroyed due to power outages, flooding, or other disaster-related damage.

Hot food purchases remain authorized in 33 counties through August 14. This includes rotisserie chickens, deli items, and other prepared foods typically restricted under SNAP rules.

The extension comes as Texas communities continue recovering from severe weather. Local resources for shelter and emergency assistance are available by dialing 2-1-1.
