A San Antonio City Council candidate publicly urged violence against federal agents, echoing a recent terrorist ambush by far-leftists.
Who is Matthew Gauna?
Matthew Gauna, a self-described Democrat and candidate for San Antonio City Council District 1, is facing backlash after posting a now-deleted message on X calling for the deaths of federal immigration agents.

DHS and Texas Leaders React
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin called the threat “depraved,” warning, “We’ll see you soon.” Federal and state criminal statutes may apply.
Texas Attorney General candidate Aaron Reitz demanded Gauna’s arrest and urged the University of Texas at San Antonio to expel him, warning: “People like this not only live in Texas — but also seek power in Texas. The enemy is in our midst.”
Context: Far‑Left Violence and Anti‑Enforcement Rhetoric
Gauna’s post comes amid a growing pattern of violent attacks tied to anti‑ICE sentiment and rhetoric increasingly coming from Democratic leaders and activists.
Just days earlier, a group of terrorists with far-left views ambushed the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, during a July 4 assault. Armed suspects in tactical gear opened fire on law enforcement, shooting a police officer in the neck. Federal prosecutors have charged 10 individuals with attempted murder.
Federal officials have directly linked such violence to extreme rhetoric from Democratic leaders:
-
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D‑WA) labeled ICE a “terrorist force” and praised those obstructing its operations. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons and DHS warned that such rhetoric correlates with spikes in violence against ICE, including a 500–700% increase in assaults on ICE officers.
- DHS Assistant Secretary McLaughlin said demographic data show a “413% increase in assaults against ICE officers” in 2025, and warned that comparisons to Hitler’s Gestapo or encouragement of rioters are “beyond the pale.”
Ties to a Broader Pattern of Far-Left Violence
Gauna’s statement follows a violent ambush on an ICE facility near Fort Worth carried out by terrorists with views similar to many in the Democratic Party.
On July 4, heavily armed attackers wearing body armor surrounded the Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado and opened fire on law enforcement, wounding a police officer — an incident that The Dallas Express previously reported.
Ten suspects were arrested and charged with attempted murder. Some reportedly carried flags and messages promoting “class war” and anti-government ideology, views often espoused in far-left circles.
Why This Matters
Gauna’s explicit call for murder crosses far beyond harsh rhetoric — it’s direct incitement. When paired with similar incendiary language from elected Democrats, it raises urgent concerns about the normalization of political violence.
