A new report from Zillow ranks Dallas’ rental market as the second most pet-friendly in the entire country.

According to the ranking, Texans are very welcoming of pets, with the top three spots dominated by the state of Texas. The list examined over 11 million rental listings from Zillow in 2024, ranking cities by the percentage of listings that were considered pet-friendly.

Nationally, only 57% of rental listings on the website were deemed pet-friendly. In contrast, 79% of Dallas listings were amicable to renters with pets, the second-highest in the country. Austin came in at No. 1 nationwide, with 80% of listings considered pet-friendly, and San Antonio was just behind Dallas at No. 3, with 78% of listings considered pet-friendly.

“Saying yes to Fido or Mittens can help landlords lease faster. Pet-friendly rentals draw more views, saves and shares, and they are typically snapped up eight days sooner,” read the report.

According to Zillow, an increasing number of people own pets, and in a renter’s market, landlords open to Chihuahuas and Golden Retrievers will find a much larger pool of potential applicants. On average, pet-friendly listings garnered 9% more views, 12% more saves, and were shared 11% more frequently compared to listings that did not welcome furry tenants.

While Texas was a clear leader on the list, one city in the state stood out at the other extreme. Houston was ranked the least pet-friendly rental city in the country, with just 38% of listings welcoming animals.

Last month, The Dallas Express reported that the city’s Animal Services department adopted 12,261 pets in 2024. This represented a 41% increase from 2023, ranking Dallas fourth-highest in the nation.
