The Dallas Mavericks’ sideline will look very different next season, with several assistant coaches departing and former Lakers coach Frank Vogel stepping in.

Vogel, who most recently served as head coach of the Phoenix Suns and previously won a title with the Lakers in 2020, will join Jason Kidd’s staff as lead assistant, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

Kidd previously worked under Vogel during the Lakers’ 2020 championship run, bringing familiarity and experience to the Mavericks’ bench next season.

Vogel’s addition comes amid major coaching turnover following a tumultuous 2024–25 season.

Sean Sweeney, who served as Kidd’s lead assistant in Dallas, is set to leave the Mavericks and become an associate under new San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Mitch Johnson.

Sweeney’s departure marks a major loss for Dallas, as he has accompanied Jason Kidd at every head coaching stop.

Although the Mavericks are losing Sweeney to the Spurs, current indications are that he would have preferred to remain with the organization.

However, Dallas reportedly failed to act on the opportunity to retain him, prompting his move to a role that would likely offer more responsibility, according to Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News.

The departures didn’t stop with Sweeney.

Player development coach God Shammgod — known for his ball-handling expertise — is joining the Orlando Magic as an assistant, according to Charania.

Shammgod has been with the Mavericks since 2019 and has a close relationship with Kyrie Irving. He’s expected to take on a larger role in Orlando.

The Mavericks could also lose assistant coach Jared Dudley to the Denver Nuggets.

Dudley, a key member of Kidd’s staff, has reportedly been granted permission to interview with Denver, though no move has been finalized.

The former NBA forward has reportedly received interest from multiple teams with open coaching staff roles, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Nuggets each showing interest in his services, according to the Dallas Hoops Journal.

Although the Mavericks were able to retain Kidd as the team’s head coach, despite rumors that he could leave for an open role with the New York Knicks, the loss of multiple assistant coaches could have a major impact on the team next season.
