The Dallas Stars have re-signed captain forward Jamie Benn to a one-year contract worth roughly $1 million with an additional $3 million in performance incentives.

The Stars posted on social media to announce the contract agreement in a video that included highlights of Benn’s career with the Stars.

Stars General Manager Jim Nill welcomed Benn back in a statement about the contract.

“Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,” Nill said, according to The NHL.

“There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season, and we are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.”

Benn will now rejoin the Stars as the longest-tenured player on the roster, having spent the entirety of his career with the franchise since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL Draft.

The veteran forward is coming off a solid season with the Stars last year, posting 49 points in 80 games while remaining one of the most important leaders in the locker room.

Although some had concerns about whether Benn would return to Dallas or retire, Benn said shortly after the season ended that he was “going into the summer planning on playing next year.”

“Prepare like I do every summer like I’m going to play. I don’t see myself going anywhere else,” he added, per The NHL.

“This is all I know. Hopefully we can figure something out.”

Nill has also spoken in the past about how he expects Benn to finish his career with the franchise, claiming during the beginning portion of the 2024-25 season that he will always have a place in the franchise.

“My plan as long as I’m GM, he’s going to be a Dallas Star,” Nill said, per The NHL.

“He’s earned that right.”

This contract adds to the active offseason the Stars have had over the last few weeks, with the team previously re-signing forward Matt Duchene to a four-year contract worth $18 million, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Meanwhile, the franchise traded forward Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for draft capital, a move that also opened up salary cap space for the team to address additional needs.

Moving forward, the Stars have a few priorities that must be managed.

Dallas must find a new coach to replace Pete DeBoer, who was relieved of his duties shortly after the team suffered its third straight loss in the Western Conference Finals, while also adding to the roster through free agency.
