Progressive Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett has lost her bid to become the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee — a major blow to the outspoken freshman from Dallas whose political rise has been marked by controversy and combative rhetoric.
“It was clear by the numbers that my style of leadership is not exactly what they were looking for, and so I didn’t think that it was fair for me to then push forward and try to rebuke that,” Crockett told reporters in Washington, as reported by the New York Post.
Some House Democrats described the vote as a quiet rebuke of Crockett’s political style. One unnamed lawmaker told the Washington Examiner that while “a lot of people see that she’s very talented,” she was “not perceived within the caucus as somebody who has big eyes for what the group needs.”
Others framed the outcome as part of a broader generational shift. Axios described Rep. Robert Garcia’s win as “a major coup for the party’s youth wing.”
Despite her disappointment, Crockett pledged to be a “team player” and congratulated Rep. Robert Garcia, who secured the top spot on the committee.
Congratulations to @RepRobertGarcia for being elected Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee.
The work of this committee has never been more critical. Let’s get the American people the accountability they deserve.

Crockett has faced controversy over the years due to her public behavior and incendiary remarks.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Republicans in the Texas Legislature called on Democrat U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas to resign last year after she co-sponsored a bill to strip President Donald Trump — who was a declared 2024 presidential candidate at the time — of his Secret Service protection.
“Considering Saturday’s assassination attempt on President Trump, which resulted in him being literally shot in the ear and in other innocent Americans being killed or injured, and, since you, just three months ago, sponsored legislation (HR 8081) to remove his Secret Service protective detail, we, the undersigned current and future members of the Texas Legislature, call on you to immediately resign your position in Congress,” the letter stated.
Crockett has made controversial statements, including a recent remark on Katie Couric’s “Next Question” podcast, where she addressed critics of President Biden’s cognitive abilities by saying, “Let me tell you something — his mental deficiency is still a thousand times better than what we currently have,” referring to Donald Trump, according to the New York Post.
Trump has criticized the congresswoman for being a “seriously Low IQ individual.”
Democratic leaders have not publicly commented on the leadership vote. It remains unclear whether Crockett will pursue another committee role in the near future.
