Dallas ISD will offer free summer meals starting July 9, providing breakfast and lunch to children and youth throughout the summer months.
The district’s Child Food and Nutrition Department announced the program will run through July, distributing weekly meal packages each Wednesday.
The initiative aims to combat food insecurity during school breaks, when many families struggle to replace meals typically provided during the academic year. Research shows summer hunger affects millions of children nationwide.
Students don’t need to be enrolled in Dallas ISD to participate. The program serves youth 18 and younger, or up to age 21 for those with disabilities.
Families can collect meals from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at two locations: Eddie Bernice Johnson STEM Academy, 201 S. Goode Road in Wilmer, and Seagoville Elementary School, 304 N. Kaufman St. in Seagoville.
Recipients must appear in person to receive food packages. Each distribution provides enough breakfast and lunch items to last one week.
The summer meal program represents part of broader federal efforts to address childhood hunger. Districts across Texas offer similar services, recognizing that hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.
