Texas authorities arrested 44 fugitives in a West Texas sweep targeting violent parole violators and gang members, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced.

The operation focused on the Lubbock and Abilene areas.

The arrests mark a significant law enforcement push in a region grappling with gang activity and repeat offenders. All those detained had violent felony convictions or criminal histories.

One arrestee faced a sex offense warrant. Twelve had immigration issues and were reported to ICE.

“Getting these dangerous criminals off our streets will help make our state safer,” said Attorney General Ken Paxton. “I’m proud of the dedicated law enforcement officers in our Fugitive Unit as well as the professionalism and bravery of every law enforcement agency that contributed to the success of this operation.”

The operation involved multiple agencies working together. The Attorney General’s office partnered with the Abilene Police Department Street Crimes Unit, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The Fugitive Apprehension Unit employs investigators, criminal analysts, administrative staff, and command personnel. Its mission extends beyond capturing violent fugitives.

The unit tracks down convicted child sex offenders who violate parole conditions. It also arrests sex offenders who fail to comply with state registration requirements.

That said, their work isn’t limited to adult criminals. The unit assists in locating missing and endangered runaway children reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

West Texas has seen increased focus on fugitive operations as authorities work to reduce repeat offenses. The multi-agency approach allows law enforcement to cast a wider net in tracking parole violators.
