When deputies from the Denton County Sheriff’s Office approached a suspect, he drew a gun on them, which led to the deputies shooting and killing him.

Deputies were serving an arrest warrant outside Sanger, near Bolivar, on June 3, according to a press release. They arrived at 10000 Field Lark Lane close to 2:45 p.m. Deputies contacted the suspect, 58-year-old Kenneth Wayne Jones. He drew a gun on the deputies, and they shot him. He ultimately died.

“He failed to comply with verbal commands and pointed a handgun at the deputies,” the release reads. “Denton County Sheriff deputies then shot Kenneth Wayne Jones. Deputies took life-saving measures until EMS arrived.”

Jones was “pronounced deceased at the scene,” the release said. According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, he died at 2:47 p.m., near a “private residence” at 10084 Field Lark Lane. The examiner had not labeled his “manner of death” at the time of publication.

No deputies were hurt, and Texas Rangers are investigating the case, according to the release.

The Dallas Express contacted Captain Orlando Hinojosa with the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, who directed inquiries to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Sgt. Josue De La Cerda, public information officer for Texas DPS, provided a statement to The Dallas Express that the sheriff’s office had “requested” Texas Rangers to investigate the shooting. “The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information is available.”
