A Texas man wanted for over a decade on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child was arrested by the FBI in Cozumel, Mexico, where he had been working as a scuba instructor, authorities said.
Rogelio “Christopher” Guadalupe Gonzalez, 50, was apprehended last week, ending a 13-year manhunt that began in 2012 when he was charged in Johnson and Tarrant Counties, according to a press release from the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.
“This arrest demonstrated our office’s unwavering commitment to pursuing justice — no matter how long it takes or how far a fugitive may run,” said Johnson County Assistant District Attorney Christy May. “We are grateful to our federal law enforcement partners for their assistance in returning this fugitive so that he can finally stand trial.”
Gonzalez is currently detained at the Johnson County Law Enforcement Center with a $1 million bond for the Johnson County charges and a $50,000 bond for the Tarrant County charges. Authorities have not released further details about the specific allegations or the circumstances leading to his capture in Mexico.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a long-standing case, with Johnson County officials emphasizing their collaboration with federal law enforcement to bring Gonzalez back to Texas to face trial.
