Later this month, the Swiss Avenue Historic District Home Tour will kick off, celebrating 50 years of displaying beautiful homes in the historic Dallas district.
The annual tour on Swiss Avenue will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and again on Sunday, May 11, from noon to 6 p.m. The tour dates line up for an ideal Mother’s Day weekend outing.
This year will mark half a century of touring historic residences in the East Dallas neighborhood. The tour will offer ticketholders an up-close look at some of the best examples of early 20th-century architecture found anywhere in the Southwest.
“This eclectic mix of homes represent virtually every style popular at the turn of the last century, including Mediterranean, Spanish, Spanish Revival, Beaux Arts, Georgian, Mission, Prairie, Craftsman, Neoclassical, Italian Renaissance, Tudor and Colonial Revival, among others,” reads a description on the SAHD website.
The tour traces its origins back to the demolition of 5009 Swiss Avenue, a historic residence built on a double lot at the intersection of Swiss and Collett in 1908. After a real estate developer wanted to build luxury mid-rise condos on the site, the community rallied to stop its construction, fearing it would eventually replace other grand homes with apartments and commercial office buildings.
Tickets for the tour run $30 per person if purchased ahead of time and can be bought on the event’s webpage. A $70 Mother’s Day package with tour entry and brunch is also available.
Guests can choose from air-conditioned mini-coaches that will stop at each location or opt for the vintage approach in a horse-drawn carriage.
Food trucks from Cousins Maine Lobster, Ruthie’s Rolling Cafe, Hamburger Man, Kona Ice, Cowtown Dogs, and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck will also be on site. Live entertainment will also take place throughout the weekend on a main stage in Savage Park, and local artisans will be selling artwork, handmade jewelry, pottery, and other wares.
