The Denton Fire Department made history on April 21 by introducing Texas’ first fully electric fire engine, a Pierce Volterra truck, based at Fire Station 1.

The $1.8 million vehicle, designed to reduce emissions and enhance firefighter safety, marks a significant step toward sustainability in a state known for its robust fire service.

The truck, which cost approximately $600,000 more than a traditional diesel-powered model, was celebrated with a push-in ceremony at Station 1, nicknamed the “Powerhouse” because it is located on the site of Denton’s first diesel plant, built in 1935. Firefighters and community members participated in the tradition of pushing the truck into its bay, symbolizing its official entry into service.

The City of Denton Fire Department commented on Facebook about the new truck, showing a video, stating: “…Yes, it is a full EV, Yes, it does have a backup diesel engine. No, we won’t be left stranded on the side of the road waiting for a charge! And the ‘Keep Back 343 Feet’ is a tribute to the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. It’s our constant reminder of why we do what we do–to serve and protect.”

The Pierce Volterra is engineered to minimize exposure to harmful diesel exhaust, a known health risk for firefighters. It emits zero emissions while driving in electric vehicle mode and pumping water at fire scenes, though it includes a backup diesel engine for reliability.

“Cancer reduction has been a very big push in the fire service. This is one more step we’re taking to protect our employees,” Denton Fire Chief Kenneth Hedges said during the unveiling, per WFAA.

In addition, the electric engine is silent during operation, making communication on an emergency site much more efficient and less stressful.

Denton’s investment reflects a growing trend: Only about 60 fully electric fire trucks are in service worldwide. The city’s move precedes Dallas Fire-Rescue’s plan to deploy its own electric fire engine in July 2025.

“If you haven’t heard, the Denton Fire Department has the first electric fire truck running in Texas, and Dallas is next!” TexasEV posted on X.

The ceremony underscored Denton’s commitment to environmental stewardship and firefighter welfare. Station 1 served as a fitting backdrop due to its historical ties to the city’s energy past.
