North Texans have a plethora of options this week to celebrate Earth Day, which is observed every year on April 22 to promote environmental awareness and inspire action for a sustainable future.

Initiated in 1970, Earth Day has grown into the world’s largest civic event, engaging over 1 billion people across 192 countries to advocate for renewable energy, conservation, and greener living.

In 2025, the 55th Earth Day event carries the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasizing renewable energy solutions like solar, wind, and geothermal. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, communities are hosting festivals, cleanups, and educational events to celebrate and support this mission. Below is a roundup of key events scheduled for April 2025:

Earth Day on the Square in Garland: On April 22 from 3 pm to 7 pm, downtown Garland hosts a free event featuring Cathy’s Critters Petting Zoo. “Bring the whole family for a fun, hands-on experience with adorable animals. Kids and adults alike can get up close and personal with a variety of friendly farm animals, learn about nature, and enjoy the beauty of the Earth in an interactive way,” the event webpage says.

Earth Day Picnic in the Plaza at CityLine, Richardson: “Bring your lunch and celebrate Earth Day with a picnic in the plaza on Tuesday, April 22 from 11 am – 1 pm.  Celebrate Earth Day with a relaxing picnic in the plaza! Stop by to pick up a free seedling to grow at home and enjoy the fresh air. Bring your own lunch or grab a bite from one of CityLine’s 30+ dining options. Lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and pups are welcome—come soak up the outdoors!” the CityLine event page encourages.

DFW Airport Earth Month 2025: Throughout April, DFW International Airport is offering free educational Earth Day kits to encourage students to engage in hands-on STEM activities while highlighting the airport’s sustainability initiatives.”Online and interactive content will include Stormwater Absorption for Flood Prevention, Solar Cars, Weather Stations, Wind Turbines, and other amazing topics.”

Campus Escape: Earth Day Edition at Dallas College: On April 22 from 10 am to 1 pm, Dallas College’s Richland Campus will offer hands-on activities and expert insights in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “Hear from a guest speaker on sustainable practices and participate in interactive stations to learn practical outdoor skills.”

Earth Day Celebration in Grapevine: On April 26 from 10 am to 1 pm, Grapevine’s Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park will host a free event with hands-on crafts, an Earth-themed bounce house, and eco-inspired face painting. Families can also participate in seed ball-making and explore more than 18 eco-friendly vendors.

EarthX 2025 Congress of Conferences in Dallas: From April 21 to 25 at the Hilton Anatole, EarthX will host “a 5-day, comprehensive environmental conference that features in-depth conversations with important business, political, and environmental leaders; presents bold solutions for the future of the planet; and creates an abundance of networking opportunities designed to build new coalitions and partnerships,” the organization states.

Reactivate Dallas Earth Day 2025 Festival of Service: The Mill City community in Southeast Dallas is hosting this festival, which kicks off with a community cleanup and tree planting project. Live musical performances and a mural design project are other highlights of this event, which runs from 9 am to 2 pm.
