Dallas police have arrested Kendrick Finch, 34, in connection with the fatal shooting of Ashlee Long, 28, in downtown Dallas.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, in the 1800 block of Main Street during early morning hours. Long, who was visiting from the Houston area, was transported to the hospital, where she died from her injuries. A man who authorities have not publicly identified was also struck and injured in the shooting, and his condition is unknown.
According to investigators, Long and a male companion were crossing the street when the man brushed his hand against a passing Mercedes. This minor incident escalated into an altercation between the groups.
According to surveillance video reviewed by police, a suspect later identified as Finch exited the passenger side of the vehicle with a gun in his hand and opened fire. The male companion with Long pulled a gun from Long’s purse and “appeared to return fire,” according to the police affidavit.
The suspect then got back into the vehicle and left the scene. Hours later, Finch called the police and confirmed that he was the passenger in the Mercedes and gave them other information about the shooting that had not been publicly released.
On Thursday, April 17, police announced that Finch was wanted in connection with the shooting and asked the public for assistance in locating the suspect. The next day, Finch turned himself in to the police. He has been charged with murder.
