U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement of Dallas arrested a man on March 26 who was allegedly involved in a 2014 vehicle accident that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old girl.
The Dallas sector of ICE arrested 46-year-old Mexican national and illegal alien Ramiro Guevara in connection to the crime, and he is currently in ICE custody with the expectation that he will remain there pending removal proceedings, according to an ICE news release.
At the time of the accident, Guevara was wanted for driving without a license. He has not been charged in connection with the girl’s death, nor has he served any jail time.
Before ICE apprehended Guevara, he was “wanted for an outstanding order of deportation on a violation of alien present in the United States without being admitted or paroled,” according to the ICE news release.
Guevara had previously filed a petition for removal relief in March 2016 but was denied in July 2017. The denial stated that removal proceedings would take place in August 2017.
However, Guevara never showed up to the removal proceedings and was not found until he was apprehended by ICE last week, according to the ICE release.
“The arrest and pending removal of this individual serves as a stark reminder that criminal aliens who threaten the public safety of our communities will be found and face justice for their actions,” ICE Homeland Security Investigations Dallas Special Agent in Charge Travis Pickard said in the release. “Every day our dedicated special agents, intelligence analysts and law enforcement partners work relentlessly to provide for our common good by targeting those who disregard U.S. immigration laws.”
This apprehension comes as ICE continues to ramp up the number of arrests and deportations since President Donald Trump took office in January.
A report from ICE earlier this month indicated that the agency had made 32,809 enforcement arrests during the first 50 days of the Trump administration, and nearly half of these illegal aliens were convicted criminals.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said in a statement about these arrests that ICE has “deported known terrorists, cartel members, and gang members from our country” and will continue to work to improve the safety of the U.S.
“We will see the number of deportations continue to rise. And illegal immigrants have the option to self-deport and come back LEGALLY in the future,” she stated in the report.
“And our team at ICE will help us continue moving forward to make America SAFE again.”
