Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan delivered the Democratic response to President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night, focusing on economic concerns and the administration’s policies.
The former CIA analyst also took some shots at Trump’s leadership, particularly concerning Ukraine. She compared Trump to former President Ronald Reagan and noted that Reagan would be rolling in his grave at the way the current U.S. administration is approaching the ongoing war.
“Trump would have lost us the Cold War,” the Michigan Democrat insisted.
Slotkin criticized Trump’s recent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, warning that they could spark a trade war and raise inflation, negatively affecting working-class families.
“Grocery prices and home prices are going up, not down,” Slotkin remarked.
In her speech, Slotkin stressed the importance of policies that prioritize American workers and families, particularly in a global economy that requires strategic investments in the country’s future.
She sought to end on an optimistic note, stating that despite the challenges facing the nation, the United States has faced political instability before and always emerged stronger.
Her brief response came after Trump delivered one of the longest addresses to Congress. In it, he laid out his vision for the future and highlighted economic and sovereign strength.
