Team USA took down Team Finland 6-1 in the team’s first game of the 4 Nations Face-Off.
The two teams were in a close matchup through the first two periods as Team USA entered the second intermission with just a 2-1 lead, but a flurry of goals to open the third period helped the team cruise to victory.
Brady and Matthew Tkachuk each scored two goals in the match, including three in the opening minutes of the final period, helping Team USA pull away.
This game also included players from Team USA breaking multiple records, as the Tkachuk brothers became the first sibling duo to score multiple goals in the same NHL international tournament game, per NHL.com.
Zach Werenski also contributed three assists in the match to break the NHL record for most assists in an NHL international tournament game by a U.S. defenseman.
Team USA secured three points with the decisive win over Team Finland, immediately jumping to the top of the tournament standings.
Team Canada currently sits in second place in the tournament after being awarded two points for an overtime win against Team Sweden earlier in the week, with Sweden receiving just one point for the overtime loss.
Finland currently holds fourth place in the tournament, as the team did not receive any points due to a regulation loss.
Team USA will now prepare for a difficult test against Team Canada on Saturday at 7 p.m., as the two teams will face off to gain sole possession of first place in the tournament.
Brady Tkachuk discussed the matchup and said it would be the “biggest game” of his career.
“There’s a big buildup to it. U.S. vs. Canada, it’s bigger than just the guys on the ice. It’s so many people past, present and future down the road that are so excited about it,” he said, per NHL.com.
The USA-Canada rivalry has only grown in recent months as President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on the northern country while claiming it could become the 51st state.
Multiple reports have now come out regarding Canadian fans booing the U.S. national anthem, including during the Team USA matchup against Finland on Thursday night.
