President Donald Trump has publicly praised Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick for his leadership in advancing school choice legislation.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump applauded the Texas Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 2 (SB2), which would allocate $1 billion in funding to support 100,000 students through Education Savings Accounts (ESAs).

Trump specifically commended State Senator Brandon Creighton for sponsoring the bill and highlighted Patrick’s long-standing commitment to school choice.
He noted that Patrick has successfully pushed school choice measures through the Texas Senate six times, only to see them stall in the Texas House. Trump urged Texas House members to pass the bill, stating, “I will be watching them closely.”
The Dallas Express reported last week that the state Senate officially passed a bill allocating $1 billion for education savings accounts. The bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives for discussion.
Lt. Gov. Patrick released a statement after the bill was passed, saying his “goal and passion has been to improve public education in Texas and provide great education options for all students.”
“In addition to supporting a robust public education system, which should be the finest in the country, I support SB 2 because I strongly believe that parents deserve choice in their child’s education. SB 2 is a universal school choice bill, with a strong focus on special needs students and students in failing schools,” he added.
The proposed legislation would provide families with state funds to cover private school tuition, homeschooling costs, and other educational expenses. Supporters argue that it gives parents more flexibility in choosing the best education for their children, while critics worry it could divert funding from public schools.
Gov. Greg Abbott has also been a vocal proponent of expanding school choice in Texas, pledging to work with lawmakers to ensure its passage. However, some Republican lawmakers, particularly in rural districts, remain resistant, fearing it could harm local public schools.
With Trump’s endorsement adding political pressure, all eyes are now on the Texas House to determine whether school choice legislation will finally become law in the Lone Star State.
