Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has instructed that flags be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings to honor Donald Trump’s inauguration.
This directive disregards President Joe Biden’s directive to lower flags to half-staff in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter.
On January 3, President-elect Donald Trump took to social media to express his thoughts on the subject:
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration. They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves. Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America over the past four years – It’s a total mess! In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast. Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Well, we are now seeing how it is playing out in Texas.
Gov. Abbott’s directive states that flags at the Texas Capitol and other state buildings will be raised to full-staff on January 20, 2025, coinciding with Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C.
Abbott referenced a federal law that mandates flags be displayed on all days, including Inauguration Day.
Flags have been at half-staff since former President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29.
President Joe Biden mandated that flags be lowered at all federal buildings, military installations, and naval vessels for 30 days following Carter’s passing, which would overlap with Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
In his statement, Gov. Abbott expressed, “Texas shares in mourning with our fellow Americans following the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. His dedicated leadership has left an enduring legacy, and we honor him by lowering flags for 30 days. However, on January 20, we will celebrate our democratic tradition of transferring power by inaugurating our 47th President, Donald J. Trump. As we come together to embrace this new leadership era, I have ordered all flags in Texas to be raised to full-staff for President Trump’s inauguration. While we pay tribute to a former President’s service, we must also acknowledge the incoming President and the promising future ahead for our nation,” per Fox 10.
