At least three people, including a juvenile gunman, were killed in a shooting Monday morning at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin.

The gunfire occurred just before 11 a.m. at the K-12 private Christian school, leaving multiple victims with gunshot wounds, while at least seven others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to critical, the New York Post reported.

Police believe the shooter, a juvenile who attended the school, acted alone, and there is no longer an active threat.

“Today is a sad, sad day,” the Post quoted Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes as saying. He said officers found the juvenile they believe was responsible for the shooting and said there was no longer an active threat.

“Every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. These types of traumas don’t go away,” Barnes added. “Right now my heart is heavy for my community. My heart is heavy for Madison.”

Barnes described the event as deeply tragic, emphasizing the lasting trauma for everyone involved. He confirmed that officers did not fire their weapons during the response.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed his condolences and gratitude for the first responders. Roads around the school remain closed as investigations continue.

“We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” Evers said in a statement.

The identities and ages of the victims have not been confirmed, and it is unclear whether they were students or adults.

Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
