Fair Park will host a mass drive-thru vaccination site for residents. The drive-thru will be set up in parking lot 13. Residents can get the COVID-19 vaccine or the flu vaccine.
The mass vaccination site has reappeared once again as COVID-19 cases are still occurring daily. The FDA has also approved the vaccination of children ages 5 through 11 years of age, increasing the demand for the vaccine. The site was open until this past July.
According to the New York Times, there were 571 new cases reported in Dallas County on November 19. The 7-day average number of cases is 319.
The Fair Park mass vaccine site will offer free Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson shots. Appointments are not necessary, but the clinic asks that residents register ahead of their arrival.
Currently, 15 million Texans are fully vaccinated, which is 54% of the state’s population.
The drive-thru clinic will also be providing the flu vaccine. Last week, officials reported the first flu death in Dallas County. While there was a decrease in flu cases last season, experts still urge residents to stay cautious and get vaccinated as the winter months approach.
“With the changes with the global pandemic of COVID-19, we’ve seen a record reduction in influenza cases,” said Dr. Jocelyn Wilson, a family medicine physician with Baylor Scott & White, shared with Dallas Magazine. “So last year there was almost no influenza and this year there have been very few cases, specifically in McLennan County.”
“We’re still kind of early in the flu season. It’s only the middle of November, and really deep winter, January, February, is when we really start to see flu cases peak,” Malrey-Horne, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District director, said.
