A driver involved in an early morning crash on Tuesday pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road and then jumped into the Trinity River, according to eyewitnesses.
The crash occurred just before 5:15 a.m. along the eastbound I-35 ramp leading to Highway 121 near Sylvania Avenue in Fort Worth. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that one of the two vehicles involved in the wreck was abandoned and the driver had jumped from the overpass bridge into the water below.
Multiple police units responded to coax the driver to climb out of the river. By 6:30 a.m. the driver had voluntarily left the river with the assistance of the fire department and was transported to the hospital. It is unknown whether the driver was injured in the incident.
Police have not reported any further details about the incident.
The crash and ensuing police investigation caused traffic to back up along the northbound I-35 ramp to eastbound Highway 21, with only one lane of traffic open for a couple of hours. The scene was cleared by 8:40 a.m.
