Texas’ most populous counties have moved rightward compared to the previous election.
In Dallas County, election data shows a swing of around 4 points in favor of now-President-elect Trump against Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 compared to his performance against then-Vice President Joe Biden in 2020.
Although still a Democratic stronghold, this notable shift comes despite years of targeted Democratic efforts in the area to turn the county more reliably blue.
Harris County, Texas’ most populous and another key Democratic target, followed with a 5-point shift toward Trump.
Meanwhile, Bexar County showed a 16-point increase in support for Trump, and Collin County, a growing suburban area north of Dallas, went 3 points redder than in the last presidential election.
Tarrant County, which narrowly broke for Biden in 2020, showed a 5-point increase for Trump. Tarrant is home to Fort Worth and still has more rural areas than neighboring Dallas County.
Travis County is home to the state capitol. It is known for its Democratic base. It recorded a 3-point shift.
The trend stands out as Democrats have invested heavily in Texas over recent election cycles, aiming to sway the state’s rapidly expanding urban and suburban populations. These figures suggest that despite these efforts, Trump made gains in areas where Democrats have recently focused campaign resources and outreach.
The presidential election was defined by concerns by Texans over economic policy, immigration, abortion, and “democracy,” according to exit polls.
