North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum made an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning and called out President Biden for claiming that supporters of former President Donald Trump are “garbage.”
Burgum was confronted by moderator Kristen Welker over a comment made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during a Trump rally last week, in which he referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”
“A comic that no one’s ever heard of says something versus the President of the United States calling half the voters in the country garbage — President Biden,” responded Burgum, according to Mediaite.
“I think this shows two things. One, it’s the disrespect of this administration for Americans and their concerns, whether it’s the border, whether it’s inflation. But it also reflects what we’ve seen is that the vice president, Harris, was part of this cover up of Joe Biden’s capacity,” continued Burgum.
Burgum’s remarks come in response to Biden’s claims about the former president’s supporters, which have raised concern about the current president alienating a large portion of the United States population.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American,” stated Biden, per The Associated Press.
Officials from the White House have been scrambling to backtrack on the comments made by Biden, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claiming that the president was misunderstood in what he was trying to say.
“He has said multiple times that he is a president for all. It doesn’t matter if you live in a red state. It doesn’t matter if you live in a blue state. … It doesn’t matter who you voted for. It doesn’t matter if you voted for him or not. He is a president for all,” Jean-Pierre said, according to The Hill.
The White House has also been scrutinized for editing the official transcript of Biden’s interview to make it appear as if he said something different, as reported by The Dallas Express.
This decision came after the White House press office “conferred with the president” over what he intended to say, resulting in the transcript being changed to reflect the president’s post-interview claims.
