Starbucks will soon stop charging extra for non-dairy milk, a shift that promises to save customers money and encourage beverage customization.

Starting November 7, customers will no longer pay an additional fee for choosing plant-based alternatives like almond, soy, coconut, or oat milk, a move announced by CEO Brian Niccol, the New York Post reported.

“By removing the extra charge for non-dairy milks, we’re embracing all the ways our customers enjoy their Starbucks,” Niccol said, according to the Post, calling it a core part of the “Starbucks Experience.”

This change caters to nearly half of Starbucks customers, who regularly opt for non-dairy substitutes in their drinks. Eliminating the surcharge could reduce drink costs by over 10% across U.S. locations, making Starbucks beverages more affordable for those with dietary preferences or restrictions.

Plant-based milk has long been the second-most popular customization after adding espresso shots, underscoring the demand for more inclusive options.

The decision follows years of public outcry from vegans, environmental advocates, and even celebrities like Sir Paul McCartney, who have pushed for equal pricing of dairy and non-dairy options.

Earlier this year, Starbucks faced legal action from customers who claimed that the non-dairy fees disproportionately impacted those with allergies or dietary restrictions, highlighting the financial burden placed on these customers.

Alongside this change, Starbucks is discontinuing several underperforming items, including the Oleato line, a unique coffee blend with olive oil that faced criticism since its debut. The olive oil drinks will also be removed from the menu on November 7 as part of a broader effort to streamline offerings and reduce wait times at busy stores.

The company will also phase out toffee nut syrup and reduce some discount promotions. This pared-back menu is part of Niccol’s larger strategy to revitalize Starbucks as a “welcoming coffeehouse” with faster, more efficient service.

Since becoming CEO, Niccol has outlined plans to simplify store operations, aiming to make the coffeehouse experience smoother for customers and staff alike.

With these upcoming changes, Starbucks hopes to enhance its focus on high-quality service and customization. Niccol emphasized that this shift is just the beginning, pledging further enhancements that will make every Starbucks visit “worth it every time.”
