The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a Trunk-or-Treat on Oct. 26.
A Trunk-or-Treat is when people gather in a parking lot and open their trunks; their cars are often decorated with Halloween themes. The premise appeared to start in the 1990s from church groups as an alternative to trick-or-treating, reported Real Simple.
Children are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costumes, and the TCSO will provide a secure, controlled environment to help them enjoy their Halloween, reported Hoodline.
The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office has held this event for years.
“The TCSO Family Alliance Trunk-or-Treat is coming up next weekend! Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office team members will be there Saturday, October 28th along with TCSO Family Alliance and the Tarrant County Law Enforcement Association,” the Sheriff’s Office posted for last year’s Halloween.
Other local police departments in Tarrant County have also practiced this tradition.
“As everyone knows about trick-or-treating, the idea of TRUNK or TREAT basically brings Halloween from the uncertain streets to the safety of a parking lot such as our Bob Bolen Safety Complex parking lot, turning the backs of cars, trucks, and SUV’s into the new front porch. This allows for a much safer environment for both the parents and youth of our communities. It will provide our Fort Worth residents a variety of activities for the youth such as trunk or treating, bobbing for apples, face painting and many other fun filled events, displays and exhibits,” the Fort Worth Police Department wrote on Nextdoor in 2016.
