A traffic stop at a gas station in Corsicana on Sunday took a dangerous turn when the driver ran over two officers.

The shocking incident was caught on a surveillance camera.

Seargent Dan McAninch of the Corsicana Police Department pulled over a silver sedan at a Speedy Mart store in the 700 block of N. Beaton St. for a traffic violation, according to Police Chief Robert Johnson. McAninch immediately called for backup officers, citing the driver’s behavior.

In the video released on Tuesday, the suspect, 31-year-old Mayson Mesiap, stands behind his vehicle next to the Valero gas pumps. Mesiap then makes a break for the driver’s side door to flee the scene. As he gets into the car, the officer runs after him and opens the car door, attempting to pull the suspect out of the vehicle.

The suspect puts the car into drive and crashes into a second police car that arrived on the scene. With the car door still open, Mesiap accelerates in reverse, dragging the first officer, who is caught in the door, and running into the second officer, Tommy Ordonez, who had run behind the vehicle.

The driver crashes into the first officer’s police car, pauses in a brief standoff with police, and then accelerates forward again, leaving the scene. However, he did not get far as the suspect was arrested following a half-mile high-speed chase and brief struggle.

The two officers suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention. A third officer appeared on the scene near the end of the video clip and was not injured in the incident.

Although two officers drew their weapons in the brief standoff with the suspect, no shots were fired.

“The officers made the quick decision not to fire due to the passenger of the vehicle, who was not a threat, as well as the officer on the driver’s side of the vehicle being trapped in the line of fire,” Chief Johnson said in a statement, per NBC 5.

“Sgt. Dan McAninch, Officers Tommy Ordonez, Trey Owens and Cpl. Michael Brooks, should all be commended for their restraint in a situation which unfolded quickly,” Johnson added, per the NavCo Chronicle.

One officer reportedly deployed pepper spray through the open window on the passenger side of the suspect’s vehicle.

Mesiap has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, two counts of criminal mischief, DWI, resisting arrest, search, or transport, and evading arrest and detention with a motor vehicle.

As the investigation continues, more charges could be added. Mesiap is currently being held in the Navarro County Jail, with bail totaling $191,000.
