The Associated Press has officially released the Week 5 College Football poll, and two universities from the Lone Star State are ranked inside the Top 25.
After being ranked last week as the top overall team in the country for the first time since 2008, the University of Texas Longhorns remained at the top after a dominant 51-3 win over the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) on Saturday.
Despite starting quarterback Quinn Ewers missing the win over ULM due to an abdominal injury, the Longhorns played consistent football and came out with a win at home.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning stepped in as the team’s starting quarterback and performed incredibly well. He threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns, though he also threw two interceptions in the win.
While many of the other highly ranked college football teams have struggled to come out with wins against inferior opponents, the Longhorns have scored at least 31 points and won by a minimum of 18 points in every game en route to their 4-0 record.
Texas has yet to be truly tested by any team this season. They will now prepare for a matchup against Mississippi State University this weekend, where the Longhorns hope to continue their winning streak.
Following the upcoming game against Mississippi State, the Longhorns will begin a difficult stretch of games against the University of Oklahoma and the University of Georgia.
The second team from the Lone Star State to make the AP College Football Top 25 rankings is Texas A&M University, which was ranked as the 24th-best team in the country following a 26-20 win over Bowling Green University.
The Aggies began the year with a close loss to the University of Notre Dame but have won their last three matchups, giving them a 3-1 overall record and a 1-0 conference record due to the win over the University of Florida.
The Texas A&M team is currently dealing with a shoulder injury suffered by starting quarterback Conner Weigman. The team has opted to start Marcel Reed for the past three games. The freshman has thrown for 422 yards and four touchdowns in his starts.
While the Aggies’ win over Bowling Green only moved the team up one spot from the previous week, they will have an opportunity to pick up major wins over the next few weeks.
The Aggies are set to take on the University of Arkansas in the Southwest Classic on September 28 in Arlington, followed by a tough game against the highly-ranked University of Missouri on October 5.
While Texas and Texas A&M will spend most of the season competing against other universities to remain as highly ranked as possible, they will also have to match up against each other later in the season to determine the best team in the state.
The Longhorns will travel to College Station on November 30 to take on the Aggies in a game that could have major implications for the SEC standings and the College Football Playoffs.
