(Texas Scorecard) – Students across the country plan to start their day on Wednesday, September 25 with a prayer around the flag pole.
“See You at the Pole” is a global student-led organization started in 1990 at a youth group retreat by students who felt led to pray at several schools in the Burleson area.
These students sent out a challenge to fellow students in Texas to gather for prayer. That September, more than 45,000 students and 1,200 campuses across Texas and three other states participated in the first “See You at the Pole” event. By the next year, it became an international movement with nearly one million students participating.
Students at local schools are responsible for the initiation of the event. SYATP’s website offers resources to help organize an event, but all organization and scheduling are students’ responsibilities. Many churches and adults support the students with prayer and encouragement.
Parents in Waller ISD are publicizing plans for local high school students to join in prayer on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m.
Cassandra Posey, a parent of Waller High School student, told Texas Scorecard, “Our students need to know it’s okay to be a Christian in the public arena, and we know that when we come together in prayer, anything is possible. So if you have concerns for our nation, state, or your local district, please show up to join your community in prayer.”
Participants in SYATP range from preschool students to college/university students.
Because SYATP is student-led, there is no official turnout prediction for this year’s event in Texas, according to National Network of Youth Ministries field director Doug Clark. However, he said that last year’s reports and social media pictures show that every corner of Texas was represented.
“SYATP is widely supported across the state,” Clark added.
