Travelers passing through Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport may experience some inconvenience as the facility undergoes a major overhaul and expansion over the next six years or so, part of the price of progress.
The DFW Forward plan calls for $9 billion in capital improvements, including updating terminals, increasing the number of gates, enhancing the airfields, expanding parking, improving the roadways, adding new shops, restaurants, and lounging spaces, improving the restrooms, and more.
According to the airport’s website, the result will be a better customer experience with more efficient operations, preparing the facility for historic growth. Airport officials project that by 2029, the number of passengers at DFW will have increased by 23%, from 87.3 million per year to an estimated 107.1 million, as reported by The Dallas Express.
DFW Airport’s website offers some updates on the current projects that could impact airport visitors.
One of the more immediate projects is the reconstruction of the Terminal C South parking garage. The entrance to that section of the parking garage will close on September 14, although the North and Central sections will remain open for use. Owners of vehicles parked in the South section will have 30 days to remove them before the demolition and reconstruction work begins.
Additionally, the Express South parking lot is currently closed, but the Express North, Remote South, and Remote North lots remain open. Travelers needing long-term parking are encouraged to book in advance to ensure they receive the best rates. They can also be provided with directions and tips for navigating the airport.
Those tips will come in handy, as various roadways around the terminals and other airport areas will be closed due to the ongoing construction projects. Work zones will also be in place intermittently along portions of the main roadway through the airport, International Parkway. Visitors may want to check the Roadway Work Zones Map before heading out.
Phase I of the Terminal C reconstruction and expansion project will focus on the area between gates C28 and C33. Due to the construction work, the security checkpoint and adjacent American Airlines counter at gate C30 are closed, as are retail shops, restaurants, and concessions in this area.
Work is also underway along the lower-level roadway from gates C22 to C39. While the roadway remains open, drivers are urged to exercise extra caution when passing through this area.
At Terminal A, several concessions have been closed near gate A13 ahead of the terminal expansion project.
The DFW Airport is offering additional tools to help mitigate the inconvenience to travelers as the work progresses. The Interactive Terminal Map shows which retail and dining options are currently available, and travelers can check for security wait times online.
