Funeral services for Dallas police officer, 46-year-old Darron Burks, are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The ceremony can be viewed live on the Watermark website and the Dallas police Facebook page. Following the ceremony, Burks will be laid to rest in a private service at Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery, per DMN.

The commemoration of Burks’ life began Friday evening at Watermark Community Church, 7540 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway in Dallas. A second public visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the same location, reported DMN.

According to DPD, Officer Darron Burks was “executed” by Corey Cobb-Bey on the night of August 29, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Burks was sitting in his patrol car at the nonprofit organization, For Oak Cliff Community Campus. The organization aims “to liberate Oak Cliff from systemic oppression through a culture of education, while increasing social mobility and social capital,” per its website.

The irony that one public service officer was killed and were two injured on the property that encourages fellowship and unity has not gone unnoticed.

For Oak Cliff board member Lynn McBee said, “We are all about building this community up… We are more committed than ever to ensuring safety and a wonderful space for the community to enjoy,” according to The Dallas Morning News.

“This was a violation of the vision of that community and the work they have done there,” Froswa’ Booker-Drew said, who chairs the board with McBee.

Upon arrival at the scene where Burks had been shot, Senior Cpl. Jamie Farmer and Senior Cpl. Karissa David encountered the gunman, who subsequently fired at the officers, resulting in Farmer being shot in the leg and David being shot in the face, DX reported. Farmer has since been released from the hospital. David remains hospitalized as of September 8, reported DMN.

Following this, the gunman initiated a pursuit heading northwards on I-35 towards Lewisville, where law enforcement intervened, stopping the suspect’s vehicle. The gunman proceeded to exit the vehicle wielding a long firearm and was met with fatal force by law enforcement officers.

The suspected shooter, Corey Cobb-Bey, identifies himself as a Moorish American National on his social media. His social media profiles also contained apocalyptic messages, and his stepfather, Emory Cobb, stated that Corey had recently been mentioning demons.

On the day of the attacks on the officers, Corey Cobb-Bey shared a video on Facebook in which he said, “You need to protect yourself and heed my words. The Earth is going to be destroyed because they want to destroy everyone. They want everyone to fall into sin. Even nature itself,” reported DX.

Gov. Greg Abbott sent a letter to Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson expressing his and the First Lady’s “prayers of comfort for the Burks family during their time of grief ” and urging “all Texans to remember and honor Officer Burks’ service as a dedicated and trusted law enforcement officer.”

Gov. Abbott’s letter was in response to Johnson, who requested that flags be lowered to half-staff on September 7, the day of Burks’ funeral.

Abbott permitted the request “in honor of the life and public service of Officer Darron Burks, who was killed in the line of duty.”

Johnson responded on X, stating, “Thank you, @GovAbbott for honoring the life and public service of Officer Darron Burks. All State of Texas and United States flags in the City of Dallas may be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, September 7, 2024, as we say goodbye to a hero.”
