The City of Grand Prairie has issued a critical advisory warning for residents living north of Interstate 20, urging them to refrain from using any tap water due to a recent contamination issue.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality mandated the advisory from the city following the discovery of a “foaming agent” in Grand Prairie’s water supply.
Due to the contamination, residents have been advised not to use tap water for any purposes other than flushing toilets. The city’s water should not be consumed in any manner, and it should not be used for cooking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or giving to pets.
The contaminated water poses a serious health risk that cannot be mitigated by boiling, filtering, or other home treatment methods, according to a press release the city published on Tuesday.
Grand Prairie officials have warned residents to avoid using the water until further notice and have advised that they rely on bottled water for all consumption and hygiene needs. The city is distributing bottled water for residents at Lone Star Park, located at 1000 Lone Star Pkwy.
Grand Prairie ISD announced via social media that all district schools, including all associated extracurricular school activities, would be closed on Wednesday due to the water contamination issue. All schools in the district will resume their regular schedule on Thursday.
The contamination was first detected on September 3. Since then, crews have been working to isolate the affected area. The exact source of the contamination is still under investigation, according to the city’s press release.
Residents of the affected area in Grand Prairie can stay informed by checking updates on the City of Grand Prairie’s website at www.gptx.org/waterissue or by calling the city’s hotline at 972-237-8400 for further updates.
