Just before 1 p.m. on Saturday, a 21-year-old man died while attempting to save a teenage girl at Lake Waxahachie near Boat Dock Park.
The Waxahachie Police and Fire-Rescue departments found that the young man had tried to save a distressed teenage girl from the water.
A boater from Red Oak was able to rescue the girl, per Hunt County Theft Reports (HCTR). The girl was reportedly part of a large church group from Garland.
CPR was administered at the scene, and the girl was then taken to the hospital, where she was revived and is currently receiving additional medical care.
The young man who tried to save the girl was discovered in the lake and brought to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
The victim’s name has not been released.
“The Waxahachie community and the local police department express their deepest condolences to the family of the young man who displayed immense courage and selflessness. His act of bravery in attempting to save another’s life will not be forgotten,” posted HCTR.
“As we mourn this loss, the community is reminded of the critical importance of water safety and the unpredictable nature of water bodies. Everyone is encouraged to practice caution and be prepared for emergencies when near or in water,” continued the post.
Travis County Park Ranger Chris Hatchett recently offered the following “emergency on the water” safety tips, as reported by Community Impact:
Throw a floatation device to the distressed person.
Call 911 immediately. Use maps, landmarks and your phone to determine where you are.
Never jump in to assist others if you are not wearing a life jacket.
Alert boaters around you with a whistle or horn.
