Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has donated $5 million to help support Texas Tech University, his alma mater, with a $242 million renovation to the south end zone of Jones AT&T Stadium and the Dustin R. Womble Football Center.
This project, which is a part of The Campaign for Fearless Champions, has been ongoing since 2014 and focuses on improving athletic facilities across the campus while improving the lives of student-athletes who choose to attend the university.
Texas Tech announced that the walkthrough area of the Womble Football Center will be renamed to honor the Mahomes family for their gift once it is officially completed, according to a news release sent to The Dallas Express.
Mahomes will also be honored as the namesake for both the quarterback meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the new south end zone building of Jones AT&T Stadium.
Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he is glad to have the support of one of the best football players of all time and that the university is proud to have such a prestigious alumnus.
“When we first launched this campaign, Patrick was only a freshman, and now it is fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of his own,” he said in the news release. “We couldn’t be prouder to announce this gift from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global scale.”
Head coach Joey McGuire echoed these sentiments in the news release: “There isn’t a greater ambassador for Texas Tech Athletics than Patrick Mahomes.”
“He is arguably the best brand in sports, not only for his success on the field but for what he and his family do off it. Since my hiring here at Texas Tech, it’s been evident to me just how much Patrick truly loves this university and football program, and this gift further emphasizes that. On behalf of our entire program, we can’t thank Patrick and Brittany enough for the impact they are making on our student-athletes and the future of Texas Tech Football,” he added.
Mahomes spent three years as a member of the Red Raiders football program before foregoing his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, ranking as one of the most effective and impactful quarterbacks in the program’s history.
During his time at Texas Tech, Mahomes threw for 11,252 passing yards, 93 touchdowns, and 857 completions, which all rank as the third most in the university’s history.
Mahomes later declared for the draft in 2017 and was selected by Kansas City with the 10th overall pick, where he has gone on to have one of the most impressive starts to an NFL career in history.
Despite only being a starter for three full seasons, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowls, including back-to-back victories in the two most recent seasons.
These victories make Mahomes the first Texas Tech alum to win a Super Bowl while also becoming only the fifth quarterback of all time to win three or more titles.
While the two-time NFL MVP has already put together one of the best careers in NFL history, he will look to continue adding to his resume in the 2024 season. The Chiefs will enter the year as the favorites to win yet another Super Bowl amidst their quest for the first-ever three-peat.
