When Planned Parenthood announced it would offer free abortion pills and vasectomies outside the Democratic National Convention, Kristen Day decided to fight back with love.
Democrats for Life America, of which Day is the executive director, launched a diaper drive for mothers in need to counter Planned Parenthood’s gimmick. The campaign quickly raised $6,000, which Day said will provide nearly 300 boxes of diapers.
The group began delivering the diapers this week to crisis pregnancy centers and migrant relief centers in Chicago.
Day said she hopes the diaper campaign reminds her party what it used to stand for.
“This is what Democrats do,” Day told The Dallas Express. “They help the local communities. Our party has forgotten about the local needs of those in the community. And I think the free abortions at the DNC drive this point.”
The Democratic Party emphasized pro-abortion policies as a priority at its Chicago convention this week. The party’s platform calls for the ability to get an abortion to be codified as a human right. The platform also calls for the elimination of the Hyde Amendment, which ensures federal taxpayer dollars do not go to pay for abortions.
Speakers at the DNC included Kate Cox, a Texas woman who unsuccessfully sued her state to obtain a legal abortion, as previously reported by DX. She later obtained an abortion out of state.
Day called the DNC platform a “disgrace.” She said many anti-abortion Democrats she knew voted for President Joe Biden in 2020 but are concerned about Vice President Kamala Harris.
“There’s a bit of the 2016 effect where a lot of pro-life Democrats did not vote for Hillary Clinton,” she told DX. “And I’m sensing that more this time around.”
“Kamala Harris’ record is just so much more damaging,” she continued. “Walz is horrific on this issue, too.”
Harris has headed the White House’s messaging on abortion following the overturn of Roe v. Wade. The Biden-Harris administration has opposed all abortion regulations passed across the country since then. Her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, signed legislation to legalize abortion on demand in his state.
Day said the Harris-Walz ticket solidifies Democrats as extremists on abortion. She said the party will struggle to win in swing states unless it moderates on the issue.
“There’s no chance of winning with a pro-abortion message in these areas,” she told DX. “There’s a huge problem where we’re just ignoring people across America as a party and letting Republicans win.”
Day said she spent time in Chicago touring pregnancy centers where mothers in need receive free goods, such as clothing, diapers, and formula. She criticized leaders in her party who described such pregnancy centers as misleading and harmful.
“We need to bring awareness in the local communities of what their needs are,” she told DX. “We need to educate Democrats about pregnancy centers, which are consistent with the Democratic values of supporting the vulnerable and those in need. These attacks are misaligned with the values of the party.”
