(Texas Scorecard) — The Texas Association of School Administrators has announced its top ten Honor School Boards. One of them has faced numerous scandals this year.
TASA is a taxpayer-funded lobbying organization representing administrators of member school districts.
In TASA’s announcement, the association said the Honor School Boards are awarded based on multiple factors, including educational performance, improvement, and “commitment to code of ethics.”
Schools TASA selected include the elected trustee boards of Burkburnett ISD, Corpus Christi ISD, Donna ISD, Grand Prairie ISD, and Klein ISD.
Klein ISD was caught in various scandals this year including one high school teacher arrested for sex trafficking, two arrested for alleged possession of child abuse material, and one arrested for indecency with a child.
The school district also had an incident where a nonverbal child with autism left the school and went missing for hours.
Previously, TASA has mocked parents who came to school board meetings calling them “crazy” and “individuals who simply want to be mad about everything,” according to attorney Janelle Davis in a statement from Texas Education 911, a grassroots network advocating for parent-driven reforms to the public school system.
TASA is also partnered with the Texas Association of School Boards, another taxpayer-funded lobbying organization. Both TASA and TASB have historically opposed school choice.
Districts like Carroll ISD have begun ending their TASB memberships, due to their priorities, critical race theory lectures, and promotion of gender ideology.
