A female pedestrian who was struck by a Dallas police squad car on Monday evening died at the hospital the following morning, Dallas police confirmed.

The officer who struck the woman was responding to a service call. He was heading east in a marked police vehicle on Elam Road in Pleasant Grove without lights or sirens when the accident occurred.

The officer immediately stopped and administered life-saving measures to the woman until she was transported to the hospital by emergency personnel. The officer was not injured in the incident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had been standing in the median of Elam Road in the 8700 block before running in front of the officer, who was driving in the far left lane, per a statement from the Dallas Police Department, according to WFAA.

The 20-year-old victim, Aresly Jaramillo, died from her injuries Tuesday morning, police said.

Per a report by Fox 4 KDFW, Police Chief Garcia said, “It’s a tragedy to the pedestrian, to her family. It’s a tragedy to our officer as well. It’s something we don’t want to go through.”

Police are conducting a full investigation into the tragic incident.
