The Dallas Stars announced on Wednesday that the club has traded forward Ty Dellandrea to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for the Winnipeg Jets’ fourth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft.
A news release from the Stars detailed the trade, explaining that the Jets’ pick that is going to Dallas had been previously acquired by the Sharks.
San Jose acquired the selection from the Tampa Bay Lightning just prior to the 2023 trade deadline in exchange for forward Vladislav Namestnikov.
Dellandrea was originally selected by the Stars with the 13th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft and made his league debut years later during the 2020-21 season.
During his first season in the NHL, Dellandrea played in just 26 games but accumulated five points from three goals and two assists.
The 23-year-old’s best year while a member of the Stars came during the 2022-23 season, in which he played in all 82 games and scored 28 points off nine goals and 19 assists.
Dellandrea has also played in 22 postseason games with the Stars, racking up four goals and zero assists during those games.
The Stars will now look to replace a forward who played a significant role on the team despite having a down year after finishing with the sixth most hits (63) on the team during the 2023-24 season, according to a news release from the Sharks.
This trade follows a disappointing finish to the Stars’ season. The team was eliminated from the Staley Cup playoffs after losing to the Edmonton Oilers in six games.
Dallas will now reevaluate ways to improve the team leading into the 2024-2025 season, as the franchise has now lost multiple key players due to trades or retirement.
In addition to Dellandrea now being on the Sharks following the trade, forward Joe Pavelski announced shortly after the Stars’ elimination that he is planning to retire after an 18-year NHL career.
Pavelski, who spent the first 13 seasons of his career in San Jose, said the decision is not yet official, but he has “known for a while” that this past season would likely be his last, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
