Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other residents of the state are calling attention to alleged election fraud in a Houston judicial race.
A Houston judge last month found that 1,430 votes in the 2022 180th District Court race were invalid. This called into question the results of the race since only 450 votes separated the Democratic and Republican candidates, reported The Hill.
“Voter fraud is real. Especially in Houston,” Abbott wrote on X.
The investigation into the 2022 race for the 180th District Court seat found that 983 votes were invalid because the voters lived outside the county or had residency issues. An additional 445 voters did not have a valid form of photo identification, while 48 mail-in ballots lacked the necessary signatures, reported The Hill.
“With the amount of distrust already prevalent within the election system and questions still looming about past elections, and the crisis at the border, which features millions of undocumented immigrants pouring into our country since the last presidential election, it is more important now more than ever to restore the American people’s trust in our elections by making sure the voting process is secure and untainted to the extent it is possible to do so,” Lubbock business owner Antonio Renteria told DX.
However, Mike Doyle, chair of the Harris County Democratic Party, stood by the election results.
“There’s no justification for redos and redos just because election deniers aren’t happy with the results of Harris County,” he said.
Tarrant County Republican Area Leader Amie Super told DX that the issue of voter fraud should be a bipartisan concern.
“Voters who have lost faith in the security of our election process are less likely to vote. This should, thus, be a bi-partisan concern and one which must be made a priority by our State Legislature if our elected officials truly desire better voter turnout in the upcoming General Election. Failing to address these concerns is tantamount to contributing, by failure to act on a known concern, to a uniquely unintended form of voter suppression,” Super said.
A new election will be set since it was unclear for whom the invalid votes were cast, reported The Hill.
A date has not been set for the new election.
