Severe storms on Tuesday morning wreaked havoc across the DFW area, leading to several school districts having to cancel or delay the start of classes due to widespread power outages.

Garland Independent School District is one of several school districts in the DFW area to cancel school on May 28. The Garland area was subject to a tornado warning in the early hours of that day, leading the district to make the decision to cancel the school day, according to WFAA.

Garland ISD posted on X this morning, saying that the closure of schools and the district office was due to concern for the safety of students and staff.

In addition to the closure of schools in the Garland area, Irving Independent School District also announced the cancellation of classes. The school district stated its plans amid the outages in several posts on X.

“We are working diligently with the electric company and the city of Irving, who are prioritizing restoring power as soon as possible,” posted Irving ISD. “If power is not restored by 10 AM, school will be canceled at those impacted campuses that are without power.”

Irving ISD posted later that students at several campuses without power, including three high schools, two middle schools, and six elementary schools, were being sent to relocation centers. As detailed in the school district’s announcement via X, students at these affected campuses were sent to alternate locations for pickup.

Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD also released a statement saying power outages and flooding at several of its campuses led it to cancel school for all campuses and close its district offices for the day.

DeSoto ISD announced a two-hour delay to the start of its campuses following the severe storms and outages in the area.
