During a Memorial Day ceremony at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Gov. Greg Abbott led a tribute for the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in service.
Abbott, alongside state and military officials, honored the legacy of these fallen heroes, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to defending the ideals of freedom and democracy.
“America is a symbol to the entire world of freedom, opportunity, and hope,” Abbott said via a keynote address during the tribute. “Today, we honor the heroes who gave their all to fight for those rights, those who went into harm’s way to protect the American way.”
Reflecting on the significance of Memorial Day, Abbott further underscored the enduring spirit of patriotism and sacrifice embedded within the fabric of the nation’s history. He urged Texans to commemorate the valor of fallen servicemen and women on this day and to carry their memory forward every day, ensuring their legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all Americans.
“In times of war and in times of peace, heroes among us have stepped forward and put on the uniform of the United States Armed Forces and have made extraordinary sacrifices to protect us from all that threatens our great nation. May we never forget the price they paid, so that we can be free,” said Abbott.
Addressing the pressing needs of military families and veterans, Abbott called for a renewed commitment to providing comprehensive support services. He emphasized the importance of initiatives aimed at facilitating veteran reintegration into society, improving healthcare accessibility for veterans, and bolstering career opportunities within the job sector for those who have served.
“Our duty to our veterans does not end with the cessation of hostilities,” Abbott asserted. “We must honor their service by ensuring they receive the support and resources they need to thrive in civilian life.”
Further highlighting several state programs dedicated to assisting veterans, including “Operation Welcome Home” as well as the organization Hiring Red, White, & You, Abbott reaffirmed Texas’s steadfast commitment to serving those who have served their country.
General Land Office Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, City of Killeen Mayor Debbie Nash King, City of Harker Heights Mayor Michael Blomquist, and various other state officials joined the governor at the Memorial Day ceremony.
