The newest professional sports team in Dallas unveiled its name and logo during a Thursday celebration at Klyde Warren Park.
Trinity FC, the inaugural team in the brand-new USL Super League, will bring professional women’s soccer to Dallas. The team will play at the Cotton Bowl Stadium at Fair Park, with the first game on August 16.
“North Texas, renowned for its youth participation in the women’s game and vibrant sports culture, has for too long been awaiting a women’s professional soccer team,” said the Neil family, who owns the team. “We are proud to be partnering with the USL Super League and building a championship-caliber team with the Dallas-Fort Worth community.”
USL Super League was slated to begin play in 2023 but announced a delay last year to allow clubs more time to iron out the details, including stadium locations and other information, according to Sports Business Journal.
Charlie Neil, president of Trinity FC, explained the name, logo, and colors as uniting factors reminiscent of the Dallas area. The name comes from the Trinity River, while the maroon color represents the sunrise and is contrasted by Prarie Gold. The Pegasus logo has several meanings, including representing the four forks of the Trinity River and the resiliency of Dallas, as the official team website explains.
“Bringing new sports teams to Dallas is critical to continuing our positive momentum as a world-class city, and it shows people across the globe that this city is booming,” Mayor Eric Johnson said, reported The Dallas Morning News.
Players have not been selected for the 8 USL Super League teams. USL Super League president Amanda Vandervort told journalists in February the league would not use a draft-style program. Instead, players are all free agents, a setup common in international soccer but one that differs from the existing NWSL women’s soccer league, as reported by Equalizer Soccer.
Vandervort said that despite both the USL Super League and NWSL competing at the Division 1 level, the two leagues have been supportive of one another. She also noted that the U.S. Soccer Federation has been supportive and helpful in getting the league off the ground. The USL Super League was initially conceived as a Division 2 league, but that plan was scrapped last year.
Trinity FC still has work to do to get ready for the season. According to DMN, the team is negotiating with Dallas College for practice space, while the Cotton Bowl is undergoing a major renovation project that won’t be complete until fall 2025.
Trinity FC will join the WNBA’s Dallas Wings, who announced they would move from Arlington to downtown. That deal is yet to be finalized, but it represents a significant economic boost for Dallas.
