Planters has recalled some of its products after a potentially deadly contamination was discovered.
The parent company, Hormel Food Sales, LLC, issued a recall on May 3 for two Planters products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also echoed the recall, as is standard procedure for the administration.
The nuts were distributed to Publix warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree warehouses in Georgia and South Carolina. The two impacted products include:
- 4-ounce packages of Honey Roasted Peanuts (UPC: 2900002097 / BIUB: 04 11 25)
- 8.75-ounce cans of Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts (UPC: 2900001621 / BIUB: 05APR26)
“No other sizes, varieties, or other packaging configurations” are affected by the recall, and no illnesses have been linked to the products, per a statement by Hormel. The recall stems from a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, which can lead to “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
“Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” continued the announcement from Hormel.
Impacted consumers can discard or return the products for a full refund or exchange.
The Planters recall follows another late last month, in which thousands of units of avocado oil produced by Primal Kitchen were recalled over the risk of glass containers breaking. As reported by The Dallas Express at the time, no injuries or illnesses have been linked to the recalled avocado oil.
