One person was killed and another injured after a car drove off an overpass on Interstate 35 in Fort Worth early Tuesday morning.
Police were dispatched to I-35W and State Highway 121 around 12:45 a.m. Portions of both roadways remained closed until 5 a.m.
According to the Fort Worth Police Department, officers believe the vehicle breached the concrete barrier after the driver lost control. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In September, The Dallas Express reported on another fatal crash on Interstate 35W near Berry Street. Following a minor collision, two vehicles pulled over on the left-hand shoulder of the road to exchange details. A third vehicle pulled over to help, partially blocking the roadway. Shortly after, two 18-wheelers hit the vehicles, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuring three others.
In 2021, a massive pile-up of 133 vehicles resulted in six deaths and dozens of injuries on the southbound toll lanes of Interstate 35. The crash occurred in February of that year and was caused by slick road conditions. That event prompted local authorities to enact HB 1885, enabling local Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials to employ temporary speed limit adjustments on roadways with hazardous conditions, either from severe weather or construction activity.
Earlier this month, the latest stage of the City’s “Vision Zero” road safety project was announced. As part of the newest phase, community engagement and the City’s public education campaign will be expanded. Programs focused on traffic safety based on crash data will also continue to be developed.
Vision Zero, enacted in 2019, aims to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and reduce severe injuries from crashes by 50%.
