Plano officials are scheduled to begin renovations at Tom Muehlenbeck Rec Center in July — a project voters approved as part of the city’s $364 million bond package almost three years ago.
According to a state filing, the work is expected to be completed in October 2025. Improvements include the fire, lighting, sound, and irrigation systems, roof replacement, interior pool deck, HVAC replacement, building modifications, replacing parking lot lights, and interior paint and flooring.
Proposition C provides $15.9 million for the 88,000-square-foot Tom Muehlenbeck project. That measure is among six propositions approved by voters in May 2021. The others finance projects that include street maintenance, parks and recreation, municipal facilities, public safety, and library facilities.
“The 2021 Bond Referendum focuses on renovation and maintenance of existing assets,” according to the city’s website. “The referendum totals $364 million in new bond authority, placed across six propositions over a four-year period.”
Fourteen parks and recreation projects comprise Proposition B, including renovations to community and neighborhood parks, trail replacement and development, irrigation improvements, athletic upgrades, and improved lighting. Proposition B provides nearly $82 million in funding.
The Tom Muehlenbeck Rec Center at 5801 West Parker Road is home to the Plano West Senior High School swim and dive teams. The indoor pool is 25 yards long and includes eight swim lanes and a one-meter diving board.
Dallas-based LPA is the design firm listed on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing. Its portfolio includes CalAmp in Richardson and Berkadia in Dallas.
