Manager Bruce Bochy and his coaching staff worked wonders last season, taking the Texas Rangers to their first World Series title.
It was Bochy’s fourth career title, and he is among those returning for the 2024 season.
Here is the Texas Rangers’ complete coaching staff entering Opening Day.
Bruce Bochy, Manager
The Rangers lured Bochy out of retirement last offseason, and it paid immediate dividends. The team was in contention for the AL West title all season and rounded into form with a run to its first World Series, giving the veteran manager four titles in five appearances in the Fall Classic.
Will Venable, Associate Manager
Venable has received consideration to become a manager of another MLB club in the offseason but returns to the Rangers for a second year after turning down the New York Mets. The former outfielder is a rising star in the coaching ranks and has also spent time with Boston and the Chicago Cubs in his post-playing career.
Donnie Ecker, Bench Coach/Offensive Coordinator
Ecker spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons as a player in the Rangers organization before turning to the independent leagues and eventually starting his coaching career at the high school and college levels. He has been with the Rangers since November 2021 and has also helped the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants, among others.
Tim Hyers, Hitting Coach
The Rangers became Hyers’ third stop as an MLB hitting coach in 2022 after stints with the Dodgers and the Red Sox. The Rangers offense has taken a significant leap under his watch, improving its batting average from .239 to .263 in just two years and scoring 881 runs while slugging 233 home runs and placing among the league’s offensive leaders last season. He is a former player with five years of big-league playing experience, and last season’s championship was his second as a coach after helping the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series.
Seth Conner, Assistant Hitting Coach
Conner joined the Rangers in 2022 after a brief minor league baseball career in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and stints as a minor league coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins.
Mike Maddux, Pitching Coach
Maddux returned to the Rangers last season and worked his magic on the pitching staff. While the bullpen had a high ERA throughout the season, it clamped down in the playoffs, and the starting rotation emerged as a strength during the year. While some injuries linger, the veteran pitching coach still has plenty with which to work in his 21st MLB season as a coach.
Corey Ragsdale, First Base Coach
Ragsdale has coached with the Rangers since 2019, altering between first base and third base depending on the rest of the staff. He has also managed multiple teams in the Rangers’ minor league farm system.
Tony Beasley, Third Base Coach
Beasley has 18 seasons as an MLB coach and nine seasons as a minor league player under his belt and served as the Rangers’ interim manager in the wake of Chris Woodward’s firing toward the end of the 2022 season. He has also worked with the Washington Nationals under MLB legend Frank Robinson and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Brett Hayes, Bullpen Coach
Hayes spent his final minor league season within the organization in 2017, joined the Rangers as a scout in 2018, and became part of the coaching staff as “Coordinator of Run Prevention” the following season. He was promoted to bullpen coach two years ago, and while the bullpen struggled much of last season, it became a vital component of the title run.
Bobby Wilson, Catching Coach
The former Ranger began his playing career with the Los Angeles Angels, was involved in an incident that helped launch the career of Mike Napoli, and caught Ervin Santana’s no-hitter in 2011. After bouncing around teams for the rest of his career, he retired and became manager of the Frisco RoughRiders in 2019 and has been with the big league club since 2020.
Pat Cantwell, Bullpen Catcher
Cantwell has been with the Rangers since 2021 after playing eight seasons in the minor leagues, which included stops within the Rangers and Blue Jays farm systems.
Chase Casali, Bullpen Catcher
The former Vanderbilt player and graduate assistant moved from an operations position with the Rangers to bullpen catcher before last season.
