The first round of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, commonly referred to as “March Madness,” continued on Thursday night and Friday afternoon.
Two Texas teams — the Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders — were among those to play later on Thursday. The Longhorns outlasted No.10-seed Colorado State in an ugly, low-scoring game to advance to the second round against No.2-seed Tennesssee on Saturday night, while Texas Tech became the third No.6-seed eliminated that day after struggling against North Carolina State.
Upsets were pretty common that day as No.11 seeds went 3-0 against No.6 seeds, and No.14-seed Oakland knocked off No.3 seed Kentucky for its first NCAA Tournament win behind 10 three-pointers and 32 points from guard Jack Gohlke.
Kansas also almost blew a 21-point second-half lead against Samford, and a controversial foul call on what appeared to be a clean block may have helped the Jayhawks escape.
Baylor was the only Texas team in action during the day portion of Friday’s NCAA Tournament games and made easy work of Colgate with a 92-67 win. Four Bears scored in double-figures to help set up a second-round matchup with Clemson, who blew out New Mexico.
The day’s first game was one of the tournament’s best as Florida Atlantic forced overtime against Northwestern, but the Wildcats regained control in the overtime period and walked away with a 77-65 victory, leading to a Sunday matchup against No.1 overall seed UConn, who had no trouble with Stetson.
Elsewhere, Marquette pulled away from Western Kentucky, and San Diego State survived a tough fight against UAB, while Colorado and Yale came up with upsets to eliminate Florida and Auburn to wrap up the afternoon.
Houston, Texas A&M, and TCU will all play on Friday night.
